Faculty Announcement – Finis Price

January 23, 2009 in Faculty by Susan Cartier Liebel

Finis Price has charted a unique path by combining his two professional passions – law and computer technology – into the development of his personal injury and trial practice. He will teach a course about trial technology at Solo Practice University™.

Working as a System Administrator in college at the University of Southern Mississippi, Finis gained extensive experience and a varied background in programming, both in applications as well as most web languages, e.g. ASP, Perl, PHP, etc. He was a Computer Science major for three years before switching back to his first major, Pre-Law, and going on to Law School.

Finis received his J.D. from the University of Louisville’s Brandeis School of Law in 2003. Upon passing the Kentucky Bar Examination, he assumed that all of the technical knowledge he had acquired was for naught unless he wanted to sacrifice his desire to be a trial lawyer.

All this changed in 2005 when the Kentucky Justice Association asked him to chair their Technology Section and develop CLE’s for Kentucky attorneys which would focus on technology in the courtroom. The goal was to help and encourage trial lawyers to embrace the use of technology in the courtroom and in their practices. While teaching others, Finis realized that he could now expand on his own legal background in the development of his own litigation and trial practice while at the same time explore new and better ways to practice law.

Finis has given numerous presentations concerning the use of technology in a legal practice for groups including: Kentucky Justice Association, Northern Kentucky Bar Association, Louisville Bar Association and the Greater Lexington Paralegal Association. Finis is also a co-host of Macs in Law Offices (MILO) Chat Weekly, a podcast dedicated to Mac hardware and software in a legal environment. He has also written numerous articles for The Advocate, the Kentucky Justice Association’s bi-monthly publication.

In 2007, Finis decided to incorporate the technical aspect of his practice into TechnoEsq. TechnoEsq is a multi-faceted organization providing litigation presentations, virtual paralegal solutions and computer forensic services to the legal community.

Recently, TechnoEsq has begun offering free trial videos online in an effort to assist young and old attorneys alike to learn from their colleagues. Learning and mentoring do not occur in a vacuum, and Finis anticipates learning as much from the students as he teaches them as they bring their background and experiences with new technologies to the virtual class room.

Faculty Announcement – Brian K. Herrington

January 19, 2009 in Faculty by Susan Cartier Liebel

Brian Herrington is an experienced litigator. He will teach a course about class action lawsuits at Solo Practice University™.

Brian is the founding partner of Herrington Law, PA. He primarily litigates class actions involving consumer protection, unfair and deceptive practices, and antitrust. Brian is also an experienced litigator in the areas of insurance, pharmaceuticals, and medical device litigation.

Brian has also taken the time to pursue what he calls “crusader” cases; cases that are of little economic value, but important in personal terms such as aiding elderly persons who have fallen victim to mortgage scams and are in danger of losing their homes. He has yet to lose a predatory lending case, and he has saved numerous clients’ homes in the process. Two of Brian’s “crusader” cases were the subject of favorable articles in The Clarion-Ledger, which is Mississippi’s statewide newspaper.

Brian literally has litigated in courts across the country from New York to Illinois to Washington and many points in between including his states of admission — Mississippi and Tennessee. Comfortable trying a multi-million dollar pharmaceutical case or obtaining a permanent restraining order against a predatory lender to stop a foreclosure on an elderly person’s home, he has proven himself to be an effective litigator.

Brian is a member of the Mississippi Association of Justice, the Tennessee Association of Justice, the American Association of Justice, and the National Association of Consumer Advocates. He is admitted to practice in all state and federal courts in Mississippi and Tennessee as well as the Fifth and Ninth Federal Circuit Courts.

Brian received his undergraduate degree from Mississippi College. While there, Brian won a scholarship to study at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz, Germany. Upon his return to the United States, he completed his undergraduate degree and enrolled in law school at the University of Mississippi, graduating in 1995.

To learn more about Brian, visit his firm website or read his blog.

Faculty Announcement – Craig Niedenthal

January 5, 2009 in Faculty by Susan Cartier Liebel

Craig is an attorney focusing on complex litigation, products liability and pharmaceutical litigation. He will teach a course about e-discovery and products liability at Solo Practice University™.

Craig received both his bachelor’s degree and his law degree from Tulane University. He was accepted into an honor’s combined BA-JD program at Tulane which allowed him to complete both his undergraduate degree and his law degree in a total of 6 years. He graduated from undergraduate and law school at Tulane with honors.

For the initial 18 years of his legal career, Craig worked as a lawyer representing automotive manufacturers such as Nissan, Honda and General Motors throughout the country in products liability litigation. Upon realizing his true calling was in helping those who had been injured and wronged, Craig began handling products liability cases and other complex litigation on behalf of plaintiffs. This has included cases against automotive manufacturers and pharmaceutical companies. The ability to fight for someone who has had significant tragedy in their life and be able to provide them some hope for the future has been an incredible gift of this journey. Craig has had the privilege of representing parents who lost their child due to suicide caused by an anti-depressants, husbands and children who lost their mother due to the taking of a “bad drug”, and in one case, an entire family who lost 3 family members and were left with 2 family members severely brain damaged all in one car crash due to the complete lack of care shown by a corporation in accepting responsibility for dangerous conditions it was causing to the roadway.

Craig brings a different perspective to cases because he has handled cases from “the other side”. He knows how they view cases, what strategies they may try, and how they evaluate cases. It permits him to anticipate how they will react to certain claims and know the potential moves before they even happen. This experience on both sides also provides Craig with different thoughts on issues than other attorneys representing the injured and wronged because for the first 18 years of his practice, he handled complex litigation on behalf of corporate America.

Craig is licensed to practice in both Alabama and Florida. He has given seminars and presentations throughout the country on issues ranging from how to pursue a products claim against a pharmaceutical company to how to address issues of production of electronic discovery in complex litigation.

To learn more, visit the Niedenthal Law Firm website or read the Alabama Product Injury Lawyer Blog.

And, in very short time every profile page will feature the faculty member’s course syllabus so you can get just as excited as we are about what they will be teaching.

So, visit often, sign up for the RSS or drop your e-mail. We will be announcing two or three new faculty per week for the next several weeks.

Announcing the Outstanding Faculty at Solo Practice University™

October 13, 2008 in Announcements, Faculty, News by Susan Cartier Liebel

Beginning the week of October 27th we will start introducing you to the outstanding faculty at Solo Practice University.

We promised you SPU would have the teachers you wished you had in law school, those  profitable in the trenches actually practicing what they preach and sharing their experience and wisdom. Some may actually teach on more than one topic.

And unlike any other site that we know of,  Solo Practice University’s faculty will really teach you the ropes of what needs to be done.   Each faculty has committed to a full curriculum of teaching in their area of expertise just like law school (no thirty minute hit and run ‘teases’)……and all from the comfort of your computer.  Each faculty member is committed to answering your questions, encouraged to be totally creative with full authority to add or vary classes based upon the students’ requests.

Imagine, you are following one of our premiere criminal defense attorneys’ teachings and an important case makes the news.  You want to understand the ramifications of that case.  That faculty member, because he or she is well entrenched in their practice area, gathers together several attorneys to have an impromptu debate on the subject, then takes a break from the syllabus and discusses this important case in a spirited and thought-provoking round table.  This is absolutely encouraged at Solo Practice University™.

Or you are learning from our personal injury lawyers.  You want to know what goes through the mind of an insurance adjuster when presented with a claim.  To make the anatomy of a personal injury suit come to life our personal injury lawyer arranges a panel discussion with an insurance defense lawyer and an insurance adjuster to get all the perspectives.

This is the type of education you will find at Solo Practice University™; – practical, timely, fluid, creative, interactive and fun.

If you can’t participate on the day the class or seminar is being offered, no worries.  Once a class has been taught you will find the class recording in our library to reference at your leisure.  You can always catch up.

As all faculty have the flexibility to teach in whatever format they choose, lessons will be video, audio, a combination of the two, workbooks, PDFs and more.

One of the best parts, faculty will also have office hours (to be determined by them). Whether through forums or recorded Q & A, you will always be able to follow up with the faculty on what you’ve learned, either asking questions live or reviewing after the fact when it’s convenient for you.

So, starting the week of October 27th we will introduce you to the current faculty, two or three per week.  Since all our faculty are experts and incredibly talented at what they will be teaching, we decided to introduce them by lottery.  That’s right, names in a hat and pulled out at random.  (We didn’t like alphabetical either).

Please encourage our faculty with comments to show your enthusiasm. Visit their sites, get to know them.  Let them know you can’t wait to learn.  They are bringing a lot to the party because they’ve decided you’re worth it and Solo Practice University™ was just the right educational environment.
