There is a lot of discussion about unbundled legal services, the breaking down of a given legal process into ‘parts’. Each part can be delegated to a lawyer to handle and paid for by the client or the client can handle themselves based upon their desire and/or budget. A lawyer’s ability to offer unbundled services….
Many lawyers see the unbundling process as minimizing the value of their services and taking their profits. Still others see it as hampering a lawyer’s ability to do a thorough job if they are only offering counsel for one or two segments of the process. But is this really true?
An increasing number of civil cases go forward without lawyers. Litigants who cannot afford a lawyer, and either do not qualify for legal aid or are unable to have a lawyer assigned to them because of dwindling budgets, are on their own — pro se.
In this time of economic uncertainties it will be a challenge to sustain oneself in business if you don’t understand how to make the right choices.
The smart solo needs to develop competency in more than one practice area and then develop strategies to maintain and grow those practice areas as the economy evolves and changes.

Business, as in life, revolves around the relationships we cultivate. The give and take we enjoy. If we choose our relationships with great care, nurture and cultivate, these the relationship have the ability to impact our professional and personal future and can profoundly determine the course of our professional lives.
All of us need to think about the value of our internet real estate, our content, our domain name and ‘branding’ and should consider these assets when we create an estate plan or even when we calculate the value of our firm should we wish to sell it.
Well, let me tell you what I would be doing if I was a law student who didn’t have that job lined up. And this comes from the mentality of one who wants to go solo but recognizes she needs experience and connections for when she graduates.
With the New Economy, while you are worrying about the cost of starting up your solo practice, the client is thinking about their costs to retain you and their own convenience when working with you.
Who remembers the advertisement for deodorant with the memorable line, “Never let them see you sweat.” ( I know I’m dating myself but when a line is memorable, it’s memorable.)
