We recognize solo practice isn’t for everyone. But the burning question remains, “who do you talk to in order to determine what is right for you”?
Whether in law school or out for a while, many lawyers are not happy with their professional path but they simply don’t know where to turn to for responsible discussion and introspection. I am contacted almost daily by lawyers who think solo is the only option if they don’t work for a law firm. Yet, once we get to talking much more is uncovered. There are lawyers who want to practice law but take a break for family life. Or they are practicing law in a way that kills their original passion for the law. And yet still others want to be independent from an employer paycheck but want to do so in very unconventional and creative ways. There is a whole segment of lawyer who needs guidance beyond what they know are the more traditional avenues to practice law.
That’s why we’ve decided to create a Resource Center at SPU. However, our Resource Center is going to operate differently. The Resource Center will have professionals, lawyers who now work outside of the traditional ‘practice’ of law and are legal career strategists.
They will have their own communities within SPU where you can talk generally, ask questions, commune with others similarly situated, create friends, network. Some will conduct guided live workshops on an ongoing basis. Others will be available privately for individual consulting (beyond your SPU tuition but at a reduced rate because you are a student at SPU).
We know going solo isn’t for everyone. But we also know many lawyers may come through SPU’s doors feeling it is a last resort. They need this extra guidance to find what in fact really is the right professional trajectory. So, we want to provide the guidance from those compassionate, qualified and well informed.
When we announce an individual is a Resource, we will lead with the header ‘Resource Announcement’ and the individual’s name. Look for the first announcement on Friday, February 13th.
