Often times new solos are afraid to publicly ask the important questions about starting a solo practice because they are concerned others will mock them for not knowing what is often considered basic. Jared Correia hears these questions all day long, often times two and three times in the same day. We thought it would be very beneficial to have a discussion with Jared so he could answer these newbie questions (which, quite frankly, more seasoned lawyers could benefit from, as well!) in a podcast which can be bookmarked, saved and listened to as often as you like. If you are a new lawyer in Massachusetts or a paying member of the Massachusetts bar, be sure to connect with Jared. LOMAP's services are free for those who qualify.

It was then I learned of his truly interesting background as well as the practice area he teaches while he grows his solo practice in Canada – Geographic Information Services law. GIS is something we all use everyday but don't fully appreciate. In today's conversation we will discuss two topics: GIS law and how teaching what you know can really grow your solo practice.

Omar Ha-Redeye is a Toronto lawyer focusing on health law (personal injury, medical malpractice, occupational health and safety, health policy) and reputation management (online defamation, crisis communications, public relations).

He is a graduate (Juris Doctor) of the law program at the University of Western Ontario. He teaches law and ethics at Ryerson University as an Adjunct Faculty member. He currently sits on the Ontario Bar Association as the Vice-Chair of the Young Lawyers Division.

Omar is a core contributor to Slaw , Canada's premiere online legal resource, The Lawyers Weekly, and is frequently contacted by the media for his areas of expertise.

During his 20 years in private practice as a solo, Spencer Aronfeld has enjoyed powerful courtroom victories over Walt Disney World, Wild Oats, P.A.C. Construction, Fedan Tire, and Todel Apartments and has gained international recognition as a lawyer for the people.

One of the reasons I LOVE doing these Savvy Solos interviews is I get to meet some truly great people. This Savvy Solo interview is my second conversation with Spencer Aronfeld. This teleseminar is a MUST LISTEN if you want to go solo. Here is a lawyer who is so committed, so passionate, and just makes you proud to be part of this profession and particularly as a solo. If you listen to no other guest lecture (all of them are great though and you really should!) listen to Spencer Aronfeld and be sure to share!

The audio is about 51 minutes. Listen or download directly below.
Savvy Solos with Spencer Aronfeld

Born in Chicago, Illinois, and raised in Wichita, Kansas, Aronfeld graduated cum laude from the University Of Miami School Of Law in 1991. Upon graduation, he founded his own firm, in Coral Gables, Florida. He has dedicated his life to representing individuals against corporate giants, such as the Carnival Corporation, Florida Marlins, Bayside Marketplace, Jackson Memorial Hospital, Miami-Dade County, Mt. Sinai Hospital, Royal Caribbean Cruises, Ltd., State Farm Insurance Company, United Automobile Insurance Company, Baptist Hospitals, South Miami Hospital and International Airplane Leasing.

Aronfeld earned international recognition after his first jury trial, when an Orlando, Florida jury awarded his Uruguayan clients a $100,000.00 verdict against Walt Disney World. Before trial, Disney had offered his clients only $1,200.00. That verdict remains one of the largest in a personal injury case against the Mouse and his legal battle was recounted in the book, "Disney, the Mouse Betrayed."

Aronfeld graduated from the Trial Lawyer College, a non-profit institution founded and directed by legendary trial lawyer, Gerry Spence in Dubois, Wyoming. Lawyers are admitted by invitation only and learn how to try cases on behalf of the people. Aronfeld has since returned as part of the faculty and has joined Spence on several of his nationwide book tours.

Aronfeld has hosted his own weekly radio talk and lectures frequently around the country. He has appeared on the NBC's Today Show, Court TV, Primer Impacto, Montel, Tyra, Dateline NBC, America’s Most Wanted, The Insider, CNN and HLN.

Aronfeld is a Board Certified as a Civil Trial Lawyer by both the Florida Bar and the National Board of Trial Advocacy. Likewise, Spencer Aronfeld is an active member of The Florida Bar and has substantial experience in his area of specialty: Medical Malpractice and Personal Injury Law.

Since 2007 has been recognized as one of Florida’s Super Lawyers and one of the "20 Most Intriguing Floridians" by Florida Magazine.

In addition to the Florida Bar, he is admitted to practice in Federal Court, the District of Colombia and the United States Supreme Court. He is a member of American Justice Association, Miami-Dade Justice Association, Trial Lawyers for Public Justice and an Eagle Member of the Florida Justice Association. His firm is AV rated by Martindale Hubbell. He is licensed to practice in Florida and the District of Columbia, and was admitted to both the Federal District Court Practice (1992) and the Federal Trial Bar of the US District Court (1993). He has chaired numerous seminars for the Florida Justice Association (Academy of Florida Trial Lawyers) and spoken at the annual convention of the American Association of Justice (Association of Trial Lawyers of America) in San Francisco and Maui.

Aronfeld has written numerous featured articles for the American Association for Justice's Trial Magazine as well as other national legal publications which can be purchased on Amazon.

In 2010, in response to the earthquake in Haiti, Aronfeld founded Lawyers to the Rescue, a not for profit humanitarian initiative to provide legal assistance and civil rights activism for those in need.

In September 2010 Aronfeld's first book was published, "Sara Rose, Kid Lawyer." "Sara Rose, Kid Lawyer" is a fully illustrated children's book that tells the story of a tenacious fourth grade girl who likes to argue. He wrote the book to inspire young children and girls in particular to consider the legal profession. A portion of the proceeds of this book, go to support Lawyers to the Rescue. The book can be purchased on Sara Rose Kid Lawyer.Aronfeld is a member of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators and another children's book, a sequel to Sara Rose Kid Lawyer will be out in December.

In 2011, Aronfeld published his second book: "Make It Your Own, the Ultimate Law Student's Guide to Starting Your Own Law Firm." The book launched at Florida International University College of Law. A reading and signing of the book was held at the University of Miami School of Law on April 6, 2011.

In 2011 Aronfeld coordinated the Student Trial Advocacy Competition for the American Association for Justice. The event was held at the University of Miami School of Law March 4-6, 2011. Students from 8 law schools participated in the event. See video here.

Hollee and I had a terrific conversation about the challenges facing professional women when it comes to working and raising a family. This book is not the same old saw about working moms vs stay at home moms. This book is liberating as it discusses the actual process – unique to each and everyone of us – to letting go (or accepting 'good enough') in certain areas of our lives to allow for greater successes in all aspects of our lives. Please listen and share your thoughts as it is very, very relevant to the solo practitioner today.

After graduating at the top of her class with a bachelor’s and master’s degree from Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism, Hollee headed to Duke University School of Law. She graduated in 1999, and then began a four-year stint as a litigation associate at an international law firm. After her first son was born in 2002, Temple returned to her firm on a part-time basis before joining the WVU faculty the next year. Hollee lives in Morgantown, West Virginia, with her husband, John, an author and journalism professor, and their two sons, Gideon and Henry.

We got such a terrific response from current students and new grads who could relate to the non-trad law grad status. There are so many more than we realize and their experiences are very unique.

I decided it would be fun to talk with Jeff about his experiences.

This is a must-listen lecture for all law students, new solos (and some not so new) about the unique journey a non – traditional law student takes and how their pre-law school experiences come into play as they navigate through law school and then start their solo practices. You can find him here every third Friday of the month discussing issues unique to the Non Trad Law Grad!

A little about Jeff: Jeff owns and runs a public-policy publishing business in Texas – since 1993, the company has published 744 titles (more than 100 of which were authored by Jeff). Jeff studied management in undergrad and finance in grad school and, most recently, completed his law degree. Jeff is licensed to practice law in Texas; his solo practice focuses on business law, intellectual property (copyrights/trademarks), and animal law (contracts/estate planning). Jeff lives in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex with his wife Cindy (Cindy is an architect) and two Boston Terriers (Judy and Izzy).

Listen to the guest lecture directly below. The interview runs approximately 50 minutes.
