Great post and a much needed reminder. Even us solos struggle with this, I am sure. I know I have at times. There are cases that I could take on that I know would make me miserable because it doesn't fit my passion to help struggling entrepreneurs with amazing ideas and folks who want to become self--employed and self-sustaining. Clients who are motivated only by money are typically not my ideal clients but I do spend some time fighting myself and wondering if I should take on that matter, you know, "for the money."

Its easy to get drawn into something profitable even if its totally "not you." As a friend of mine says, "just because you can do it, doesn't mean you should." Thanks for the reminder, Lurie. Its important so that we can regularly evaluate where we are in life and determine if we need to change course a bit to stay on our great path rather than end up on the road to regret.

Your post resonated with me; on most days, I feel the same way, as do most solos I think. Most of the victories we recount aren't about a huge fee but about keeping a client in her home or securing funding for a fledgling company or making someone's life just a little bit easier. Yet if I'm being as honest as the partner you mentioned in your post, I will confess that there are days when I wish that I'd stayed at a law firm, working like a dog but pulling in a monthly paycheck that would cover a month of college or private school tuition in a blink of an eye. My daydream usually ends when I realize that I'd probably have been miserable along that path but even so, I do have those moments.
