Excellent post Susan! I sometimes worry that I am (and have even been accused of being) a "doom and gloomer" when it comes to the economy. I don't particularly enjoy being pessimistic but when I look at the math underlying the macroeconomic picture, I come away rather skeptical about the nascent recovery being proclaimed by many experts. My skepticism only grows when I see economists using a phrase like "jobless recovery". Now I'm even starting to see the phrase "job-loss recovery" trickle out into the recovery meme.

The inherently flexible nature of the solo practice is one of its most valuable characteristics. We should always take advantage of this adaptability when either an opportunity or a constraint presents itself.

I don't think you're acting the part of grim reaper at all. This is extremely sensible advice. In all fields, the legal one included, it's important the follow the trends and listen to what your customers want and need. Economic downturns cause some fields to dwindle and others to flourish. The same will be true when the economy improves--some of those fields that prospered in the depression will shrink again. While you don't want to jump on every trend, it is important to be aware and prepared to make necessary adjustments.
