I am in the process of going solo after life as a big firm lawyer and am pleased to find a wealth of information and advice on the topic. I agree with the premise that a lot of clients - even a lot of big firm clients - could care less about the typical law firm amenities and do notice the overhead costs when they visit a large law firm's cushy digs. I've considered working from home but it isn't a solid option with kids around the house - too many distractions - so I'm looking at office shares. Setting up shop at home - even in a space outside the house (say, over the garage) - takes a certain amount of hardheartedness when the kids come by and beg you to take them to the pool. Perhaps after a year or two as a solo I will be disciplined enough to make the transition to my fee simple estate.

I have practice out of a home office for the past 2 years - ever since I started my practice right out of law school. I love the freedom and the extra time it gives me. I meet clients at my "by the hour" office and that is where I get my mail as well. I only go there twice a week on average. I would not trade my home office or work style for anything - because quite frankly, I don't know any divorce lawyer happier than myself.

I definitely think some clients would appreciate a lawyer who came to them or who kept their overhead low and passed the savings on to them. There may be lawyers who truly "need" the office, but I think many more could make the move to home office lawyering than realize it!
